1.Large scale tuna longline fishery

Taiwanese large scale tuna longline fishing vessels operate in three oceans, and all fishing vessels have to been authorized by the Government of Taiwan annually. The logbook of individual fishing vessel will be delivered to this council and inputted into the database after reviewing by senior statistician. The individual logbook data will be processed by program with error detection. In case that any suspicious item is found, the senior statistician will contact the fishing company to correct the possible errors detected according to the company’s replications. Before compilation, the statisticians will cross- check the catch records of individual logbook with statistical documents, weekly catch reports, observer data and VMS data to filter the data with doubt again, and the senior statistician will assist in reviewing the results of filtration and contact the fishing company to correct the records in logbook. The procedures mentioned above can enhance the accuracy of logbook data collected from individual fishing vessel.

2.Small scale tuna longline fishery

There are about 1,800 Taiwanese small scale tuna longline fishing vessels in operation, and their fishing grounds cover the EEZ of Taiwan as well as the three major oceans. The fishing vessels operating in the EEZ of Taiwan unload their catches at the domestic fishing ports, and the fishing vessels fishing based in foreign ports will sell their catches locally through the brokers at that foreign port. The logbook of domestic ports based fishing vessel is basically collected by the staff of this council at the field office in three domestic fishing ports. The basic data processing procedures is similar to the one mentioned in the large scale tuna longline fishery section.

3.Tuna purse seine fishery

Right now, there are 34 Taiwanese purse seiners operating in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, mainly in the EEZs of island countries. According to the law and regulations, purse seine fishing vessels have to submit their logbooks at the end of each fishing trip, to the Taiwan Tuna Purse Seiners Association, who will then gather and transmit those logbooks to this council. The logbook data of individual purse seiner will be checked with their fishing locations and VMS data, and correction will be made in case that any error is found before, the data be compiled into the database of this fishery.

4.Squid and saury fisheries

Since this fleet is required to report fishery data through e-logbook and submit a paper logbook at the end of operation, the statistician would compile the e-logbook data weekly and cross- check with the logbook received from vessel to correct any possible discrepancy. After that , the logbook data will be further checked with the unloading data, and then compiled into the database.
